It all started with a simple question: 'Where does this come from?'
I created The Supply Chain Game to help my kids better understand how everyday products like food, clothing, and technology enter our lives. Too often, we don't think about what happens before something arrives on a store shelf. This game helps reconnect us with that process, encouraging curiosity and awareness about the world around us.
It's simple to play: Pick any object and trace it to its origin. Players uncover the hidden journey behind everyday items through logic, discussion, and research. Whether played casually at the dinner table or as a structured learning tool in classrooms, The Supply Chain Game sparks real-world conversations and a deeper appreciation for what we use, eat, and wear.
This game is designed to be played by anyone, from young kids to lifelong learners.
And the best part? It's 100% portable! No batteries, no WiFi, no pieces to lose-just your brain and whatever's around you. The Supply Chain Game is always ready to play, whether at home, in a classroom, stuck in traffic (passenger only, please!), or waiting for food at a restaurant.
The Supply Chain Game brings back real-world awareness in a world where we rarely stop to think about where things come from. This fun, screen-free challenge invites **players ages Four to Forever** to trace everyday objects-whether food, clothing, or household items-back to their origins. It's a game of curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world connection. No pieces, no setup. Pick something around you and start the journey.
Why Play?
In today's world, we often take everyday items for granted without considering where they come from or how they're made. The Supply Chain Game brings back that awareness, encouraging players to think beyond the store shelf and uncover the hidden journey behind everything we use, eat, and wear.
By playing, you'll:
- Reconnect with the world around you
- Discover the surprising origins of everyday objects.
- Appreciate the effort behind products
- See the whole picture, from farmers and factory workers to logistics and retail.
- Understand global connections
- Learn how industries, transportation, and resources shape our daily lives.
- Think critically - Develop problem-solving skills by breaking down complex supply chains.
Whether you're a kid, a parent, a teacher, or a grandparent, The Supply Chain Game turns curiosity into a deeper appreciation for the world.
How to Play
1. Pick an object—it could be anything: the food on your plate, the shoes on your feet, or even the device you're reading this on.
2. Trace it back - Where did it come from? How was it made? What materials were used?
3. Discuss & Discover - Use logic, research, and conversation to fill in the missing steps.
4. Go deeper - Consider how transportation, production, and global trade factor into the journey.
For younger players, the game allows them to use logic or guessing. Most food, for example, can be traced back to the earth or the sun! The game allows older players to research, use prior knowledge, and discuss their findings. This game is designed for parents, teachers, and even grandparents to play with kids and students, sparking real-world awareness at any age.
Example: The Supply Chain of Cheerios
Have you ever wondered how a simple bowl of Cheerios gets to your table? Let's break it down.
Step 1: Pick an Object
A bowl of Cheerios sits on the breakfast table. But where did those little O's come from?
Step 2: Think It Through
- Cheerios are made from whole-grain oats.
- Oats come from farms, where they are grown and harvested.
- After harvesting, oats are processed to remove the husk and prepare them for food production.
- The processed oats are sent to a cereal factory, where they are shaped into those familiar O's and baked.
- The finished cereal is packaged and sent to grocery stores for people to buy.
Step 3: Discussion & Discovery
- Where are oats grown? (Mostly in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.)
- How do they get from farms to factories? (By trucks, trains, or even ships.)
- What happens to the leftover oat husks? (They can be used for animal feed or biofuel.)
- How does Cheerios get to your store? (Through distribution centers and supply chains.)
Final Thought: A simple bowl of Cheerios has traveled hundreds or thousands of miles before landing in your kitchen. Every step- from farm to factory to store- connects people, machines, and processes in ways we often overlook.
Everything we use doesn’t just appear—it also doesn’t just disappear. After an object serves its purpose, what happens next? The Supply Chain Game isn’t just about where things come from, but also where they end up.
By thinking about the end-of-life of products, we can better understand:
-Recycling & Repurposing – Can this be reused, recycled, or composted?
-Waste & Landfills – If it can’t be recycled, where does it go?
-Sustainability & Impact – What are the long-term effects of throwing things away?
Example:
-Cheerios Box – Is it recycled, composted, or thrown away? What happens if it ends up in a landfill?
Every object has a journey—not just to you, but beyond you. The Supply Chain Game™ helps spark discussions on sustainability, waste management, and how small choices affect the bigger picture.
